The Bartók Music Secondary School of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music is Hungary’s oldest music high school. Ferenc Liszt played a leading part in bringing together the resources necessary for its creation, holding two fundraising concerts with all proceeds going to the school. In 1840 the school had 75 students, while just 10 years later there were 200, as sections devoted to the piano, violin, cello, flute and clarinet were added to the original singing, composition and choral departments. Currently the ‘Konzi’ has more than 350 students, with young people hoping to pursue a career in music studying in 23 faculties. Teachers not only communicate their expertise at the highest level but also share their own experiences as performance artists to inspire their students and teach them what it is like to be an artist and how best to perform on stage.
